Headlamp Nonsense

Seasons are changing. When I took off at 5:40am, the horizon was just starting to hint at morning. The moon was small too, so it was pretty dark. I wore this dumb headlamp that I bought on woot.com. It was not meant for running, which meant that it was way too heavy. I should have thrown it in the bushes and picked it up on the way home, I'm going to pay with a stiff neck. It was kind of cool to see how much my head bobs and moves around when I run. This becomes very obvious with a spotlight on your forehead.

We are heading Up North this weekend. I am excited about running some slightly different routes. Harper wants to go out on the boat too, so that will be fun. I want to bring my road bike, but that means no family bike rides and at least 1 hour of no Daddy... hmm. Probably going to lose that battle.

All you have to do is run.

I really like the idea that all you have to do in order to be a "runner" is run. It takes all the bs expectations about pace, distance, finish place, etc and sets them aside. You do not have to qualify for Boston to be a runner. I missed that 5 yrs ago when I ran my marathons.

I felt great this morning. I didn't push my pace and really enjoyed the sights (except for the bugs I swallowed near home). When I got home Mel was just getting up. It was very nice to see her after a fun run.

I am a runner.

First mobile blog

I'm trying out a post from my droid. Nothing much to say.

Hot Muggy Morning

Mel and I both ran this morning. 5 years ago, this would have meant running together, but with a sleeping 2.5 year old, that just won't fly. With both of us doing less than 30 minute runs, it isn't a big deal. I'm not sure how the weekend runs will go...

I saw a few deer just down the block at the start of the run, which is something I always enjoy. Two babies and a momma, scattered silently away from me huffing and puffing down the street.

I'm still in the phase with the HRM where I don't know what it really means. I don't have my ranges down, so I'm not letting my watch dictate anything yet.

I may go over and swim at lunch just to keep up the compulsive nature of this fitness kick.

Wet Lunch

The crowd at the pool was about average today. I had to split the outside lane with someone that left after about 6 minutes. I don't like swimming in the outside lanes because they are usually the ones preferred by slower swimmers and I feel like a tool swimming there. I'm not going to double up one of the middle lanes if there is a lane open though, so I just kept going.

I did not have much of a plan for the workout today. It is supposed to be a rest day for the half training. I did an easy 500 while messing around with my new heart rate monitor. I couldn't get it to work very well, but when it did, I realized that I was working about as hard as I do when I walk. This isn't a huge suprise, I always say that I could swim forever at an easy pace. Anyways, I decided to pick it up a bit. I did 5x100 on the 1:30 holding around 1:15s and then 10x50 kick on the 1:00. I was considering a 500 trying to hold 1:20s, but instead did 5x100s on the 1:20 which wasn't too bad. I got about 5 seconds rest on all of them. A quick 200 warmdown and I was back to work.

Registered for Detroit 1/2 Marathon

I'm very excited to be running regularly again. Mel and I registered for Free Press Detroit Marathon races (1/2 for me, 5K for her). I started running again back in April in preparation for a sprint triathlon. 80 miles to date is not that impressive, but it has been accompanied by 135 miles on the bike and 75,000 yards swimming. The last two Sunday's I've gone just over 10K without issue, so I'm not worried about getting ready for the half.

I'm going to follow Hal Higdon's novice training schedule for the half. Our new neighborhood has a 3.15 mile loop. I'm going to be seeing a lot of my neighbors as the summer winds down.
